Therapeutic effects of Prednisolone ointment: Prednisolone, the active ingredient of this medicine, belongs to a class of medicines called corticosteroid. These are substances that are primarily applied in reduction of inflammation of the skin. Usually, skin inflammation occurs due to release of certain kinds of substances by the immune system of the body. These substances cause the following effects: widening of the blood vessels, irritation, reddening, swelling, itching, and pain. Prednisolone works by acting on the skin cells and reduce the release of substances that cause the above mentioned reactions. This medicine is a corticosteroid that when applied to the skin provides a moisturizing base that provides a layer of oil on the surface of the skin, helping to prevent water from evaporating from the skin surface. This action helps to reduce the itching, dryness, scaling of skin.
Indications: Prednisolone is applied for treating:
- Atopic dermatitis (Eczema)
- Skin inflammation
- Reactions to insect stings
Precautions and Restrictions: Do not use this ointment under the following circumstances:
- Chronic skin condition called Rosacea
- Cystic acne
- If the user is below the age of 10, unless advised to the contrary by an expert
- Skin infection caused by bacteria, fungi, and virus
- Tiny red bumps form around the mouth (perioral dermatitis)
- Do not use this ointment if you are pregnant, unless advised to the contrary by a medical expert. Even when used, do not apply on a large area of the skin, underneath airtight dressings, or don't use for a long period of time.
- The same goes for users who are breast feeding mothers too. If this medicine is applied on the breasts, wash it off before breastfeeding the baby.
Warning!
- If this ointment is used on children then do not use it for a long period of time
- Do not apply it for a long time on the face
- Prednisolone ointment when used for a long period of time, under tight dressing, or under nappies, will result in more absorption of this ointment. This may cause many effects such as thinning of skin, itching, etc. For this reason prolonged use of this medicine should be avoided.
- Prednisolone ointment is for external use only.
- Do not allow this ointment to come into contact with eye or other moist parts of the body, like mouth, nasal passage, etc. Wash or rinse with water if such contact occurs.
- If you apply this ointment using hand, then wash it thoroughly before doing other activities, unless hands themselves are the area of application.
- If there is no change in the condition of the affected area after seven days or if the user experiences other infections then stop using this medicine and consult a doctor at once.
Side effects of Prednisolone ointment: When people use medicines or medicinal products on certain occasions they may experience few side effects. Side effects are only a distant possibility and there are no prior proven records to show that all users of this product will experience side effects.
- Skin thinning
- Skin pigmentations problem
- Condition in which the skin becomes red, sore, or inflamed after direct contact with a substance (contact dermatitis)
- Abnormal amount of hair growth on the body (hypertrichosis)
