Microgynon - oral contraceptive drug
The preparation contains low dosages if hormones, thus exerts high tolerability, thus slightly affecting the metabolic processes in the organism. The contraceptive effect of the drug is explained by two mechanisms, the effect of levonorgestrel consist in suppression of gonadotropic hormones productions, which in torn slows the development of the ovule.
The contraceptive effect of the drug is enhanced by ethinilestradiol a synthetic analogue of follicular hormone estradiol, which participates in the initiation of the menstrual cycle. Additional mechanisms of Microgynon are increase of mucous viscosity in the uterus, which negatively affects the spermatozoons movement.
The active ingredients in Microgynon are contained in low dosages, thus the preparation does not affect the main function of the central or peripheral nervous system, hemodynamics, gastrointestinal system or any other systems.
Both of the active ingredients contained in the drug are absorbed fully and rapidly after administration from the GI tract. The maximum concentration of the active ingredients in blood can be monitored within 30 minutes to an hour. Consecutive everyday use of the drug is not accompanied by accumulation of the ingredients or there metabolites in the body. The preparation is eliminated via the kidney or fecal route. The half-life of the drug reaches 24 hours. The drug may be excreted with milk.
