Microgynon: the oldest birth control
Microgynon - oldest contraception
It was for the first time ever when appeared a hormonal contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol less than 50 micrograms, thus establishing a whole class of low-dose oral contraceptives. Ever since, low-dose hormonal contraceptives as Microgynon have become a standard drug, and pills with high doses of estrogen gradually disappeared. Microgynon is still present on the market even today after more than 35 years since its introduction. Microgynon is very effective and well tolerated and is included in the WHO list of essential medicines.
Microgynon is taken by mouth with the objective of preventing pregnancy. Each pack of Microgynon contains three strips of 21 tablets.
Microgynon tablets contain ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. They are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. Combined oral contraceptive pills, such as Microgynon, provide one of the most effective reversible methods of contraception known. Usually, when Microgynon is taken according to the instructions, the egg cells (normally released by the ovary each month) are prevented from maturing to the point where they can be fertilised. In addition, the cervical mucus remains thick, so it is more difficult for a man's sperm to enter the womb. Also, the lining of the womb is not prepared sufficiently for a fertilised egg to grow in.
When using Microgynon you should stop smoking, especially if you are older than about 35 years of age.
