Cerebrolysin: general properties and main characteristics
Cerebrolysin - a hydrolyzate of protein extracts
The main mechanisms of action of the active peptide fractions of Cerebrolysin is regulation of energy metabolism in the brain, neurotrophic effect and activity modulation of endogenous growth factors, interaction with systems of neuropeptides and neurotransmitters.
Experimentally was proved that Cerebrolysin, on one side, reduces the oxygen need of the brain forming its increased resistance to factors of ischemia-hypoxia, on the other side it enhances aerobic metabolism significantly reducing the level of lactate in the nervous tissue.
Established antioxidant properties of Cerebrolysin are due to inhibition of free radical oxidation and lipids peroxidation, as well as a positive influence on the homeostasis of trace substances (magnesium, potassium, selenium, manganese and vanadium) which have antioxidant properties.
It was demonstrated a significant effect of Cerebrolysin on postnatal development of the brain associated with a significant increase in the synthesis of proteins and polypeptides, activation of mitochondria in neurons, modulation of the ratio of DNA / RNA. Under the influence of Cerebrolysin occur acceleration of differentiation of the individual layers of brain tissue, increase of growth and formation of capillary network.
Cerebrolysin is not toxic and rarely shows side effects mainly during the rapid infusion (lowering the threshold of convulsive readiness of the brain). After high doses of Cerebrolysin (30-50 ml) may appear transient headache and hot flushes. There are limitations to use of Cerebrolysin: seizures, kidney failure, I trimester of pregnancy.
