Drug name: Kenalog
Active Ingredients:
- Triamcinolone
Therapeutic effect of Kenalog: Triamcinolone, the active ingredient of Kenalog, is a synthetic corticosteroid that can be administered to a person in various ways (injection, cream, inhalation, and tablets). Kenalog's medicinal properties are the following: anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, thyrotropic hormone inhibitor, follicle-stimulating hormone inhibitor, it invigorates the central nervous system, it stimulates the creation erythropoietin which increases the amount of red blood cells, and it reduces the level of eosinophils and lymphocytes. The primary function of this medicine is inhibiting the production of prostaglandins which causes inflammation and other allergic reactions. Kenalog by blocking prostaglandins reduces swelling and other allergic symptoms.
Indications: Kenalog is administered to treat:
- Antibodies directed against the person's own red blood cells (Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia)
- Inflammation of the bursa (Bursitis)
- Inflammation of the lining of the sheath that surrounds a tendon (Tenosynovitis)
- Cancer of the lymphocytes (lymphoma)
- Allergic rhinitis
- Inflammation of an epicondyle (Epicondylitis)
- Diseases that cause inflammations such as arthritis, asthma, Crohn's disease, etc
- Adrenal gland not producing adequate amounts of hormone (Adrenal insufficiency)
- Inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues (Rheumatoid arthritis)
- Cancer of blood forming cells (Leukaemia)
Precautions and Restrictions: Do not use Kenalog under the following conditions:
- Joint or surrounding tissue infections
- Do not inject into the achilles tendon
- Do not inject into the tendons
- Do not inject into the spinal cord
- Infection that affects the whole body (systemic infection)
- Intravenous injection
- If the user is below the age of 6
- If the user is pregnant
- If the user is highly sensitive to the active ingredient of this drug or other corticosteroids
- If the user is a breast feeding mother
If the following conditions applies to you then discuss with your doctor before using Kenalog:
- Viral diseases like exanthematous disease
- Intestinal anastomosis
- Symptoms of mental illness (Psychotic illness)
- Steroids induced muscle diseases
- If the women has crossed menopause
- Peptic ulcer
- Thinning of bone tissue (Osteoporosis)
- Glomerulonephritis
- Various liver ailments
- Glomerular nephritis
- Inflammation of the diverticulosis (Diverticulitis)
- Thrombophlebitis
- Various infectious diseases
- Thyroid gland does not produce adequate amount of hormone (Hypothyroidism)
- Mental disorders
- Any Heart related ailments
- Personal or hereditary history of Glaucoma
- Epilepsy
- If the user is of old age
- Inactive tuberculosis
- Diabetes
- Any kidney ailment
- Neuromuscular disorder like myasthenia gravis
- Metastatic carcinoma
It is not advisable to stop the treatment all of a sudden.
While undergoing this treatment the medical care provider usually provides a steroid card which holds information about the medicines you are using, the name of the doctor and other particulars. This card should be maintained at all times and should be shown to the person who treats you.
The active ingredient of Kenalog, Triamcinolone can make you susceptible to infections or symptoms related to various infections.
Side effects: Kenalog like all other medicines can cause certain unintended reactions on certain people. These adverse unintended reactions may or may not affect every user of this medicine. Some of the side effects of this medicine are:
- Problems related to the digestive system such as peptic ulcer, diarrhea, upset stomach, tympanites, vomiting and nausea.
- Problems related to the central nervous system such as lack of strength, muscle wasting, depression and sleeplessness.
- Various allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, skin thinning, rashes and irritation.
- Other side effects that may occur are hersutism, fungi contamination, adrenal suppression, hypersensitivity to infections, increased risk of fractures of the bones, acne and osteoporosis.

Interactions: Drugs produce varied results when combined with other drugs. Here are a few examples on how Kenalog taken in combination with other drugs can affect your body.
- Medicine like aminoglutethimide, rifampicin, barbiturates, Antiepileptics can lower the therapeutic effect of Kenalog by removing triamcinolone from the body.
- Drugs such as acetazolamide, amphotericin, carbenoxolone, or diuretics when taken with Kenalog can cause hypokalaemia.
- Kenalog when used with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can increase the risk of stomach ulcer and bleeding.
- Kenalog when used with medicine used to treat hypertension can affect its antihypertensive effect.
- Kenalog may reduce the effectiveness of drugs used to treat diabetes.
- Kenalog may increase the risk of infections if live vaccine is given to the patient.
