Drug name: Generic Maxalt

Active Ingredients: rizatriptan benzoate

Therapeutic effect of Generic Maxalt: Rizatriptan benzoate, the primary ingredient of Maxalt, is part of a class of compounds known as 5-HT1D- receptors agonist. Rizatriptan benzoate by binding itself to serotonin receptors constricts the blood vessels of the brain. This action reduces pain and this medicine is used for treating symptoms of migraine.

Indications: Generic Maxalt is an effective drug to treat migraine.

Precautions and Restrictions: It is not advisable to use Maxalt under the following circumstances:

  • Hypertension
  • Constriction of blood vessels caring oxygen and blood to the heart (Coronary heart disease)
  • Chest pain (Angina)
  • Heart Arrhythmia (Abnormal heart rhythm)
  • Depression
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney and liver disorders
  • Condition in which an infant is born without the ability to properly break down an amino acid called phenylalanine (Phenylketonuria)
  • Condition in which temperatures or emotions block blood flow to the toes, fingers, nose and ears (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Inadequate flow of oxygenated blood to the intestines (ischemic bowel disease)
  • Condition which results in the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (peripheral vascular disease)
  • Heart attack in anamnesis
  • Concomitant use of Monoamine Oxidase

Side effects of Maxalt: The use of this medicinal drug may give rise to some side effects that are contrary to what is expected. There are not reports that these adverse reactions will affect every user of this drug. Some of the potential side effects of Maxalt tablets include the following:

Dry mouth (xerostomia), Pain in the chest, tingling and burning sensation, nausea, drowsiness, lightheadedness and fatigue.

Other lesser occurring side effects are hot flashes, muscle spasm, perspiration, fever, confusion, allergic symptoms, diarrhea, dyspepsia and lightheadedness.
