Therapeutic effect of Hydrocortisone: Hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoid which is produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal gland. This compound prevents the release of certain chemicals in the body that are responsible for occurrence of certain allergic reactions like inflammations and other symptoms. Hydrocortisone suppresses prostaglandins which increases vascular permeability, leuakocytosis and causes the disruption of blood-aqueous humor barrier. Prostaglandin also has an effect on the blood vessels inside the eye and it can increase the intraocular pressure.
Indications: Hydrocortisone which is available as an eye ointment is used for treating:
- swelling or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids (Conjunctivitis)
- inflammation of the eyelash follicles (Blepharitis)
- a condition which is a combination of both blepharitis and conjunctivitis (Blepharoconjunctivitis)
- inflammation of the eye cornea (Keratitis)
- dry eye syndrome (DES)
- iInflammation and irritation of the episclera (Episcleritis)
- inflammation of the nasolacrimal sac (Dacryocystitis)
Precautions and Restrictions: Do not use Hydrocortisone eye ointment if:
- You have an eye condition that damages the optic nerve (Glaucoma)
- You suffer from eye infection caused by Herpes simplex virus
- You are very sensitive to Hydrocortisone or similar substances
- You experience eye redness
- Bacteria, fungus or virus are present at the treatment location
