Drug name: Avandia
Active Ingredients: rosiglitazone
Therapeutic effect of Avandia: Rosiglitazone belongs to a class of drugs called Thiazolidinedione and is used for treating type 2 diabetes. Rosiglitazone by binding itself to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in the fatty cells makes it more sensitive and responsive to insulin. By attaching itself to PPARs this drug reduces the blood concentration levels of insulin, fatty acids and glucose. Avandia does not increase the production of insulin, it increases the responsiveness to insulin. Avandia also does not cause hypotension.
Indications: Avandia is administered to treat Type 2 Diabetes mellitus:
- This medicine is taken alone with dietary changes and physical exercise as a means to treat diabetes
- This medicine is also taken along with other anti-diabetic medication
Precautions and Restrictions: If you are using Avandia tablets, be cautious of the following conditions:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- Diseases related to liver
- Pregnancy
- Lactation
- If the user is below the age of 18 years
- Used along with insulin
- Acute renal failure
- Highly sensitive to the ingredients of this drug
