Active Ingredients:

  • levonorgestrel, ethinyl estradiol

Therapeutic effect of Microgynon: Microgynon comes from an oral combined estrogen-gestogen contraceptive medication. The contraceptive effect of the drug aids in the prevention of the ovulation process by blocking the maturation of the gemic egg cell. Microgynon can also modify hidden cervical properties of the endomethrium and that is making sperm cell unable to fertilize eggs. In turn, this drug ensures several methods of protection from unplanned pregnancy

Indications: Microgynon tablets are used to prevent pregnancy.

Precautions and Restrictions: Do not use this medicine if the following conditions apply to you and if you are already using this drug then discontinue its use at once:

  • Formation of blood clots inside the arteries and veins (Thrombosis)
  • Blocking of a blood vessel by a blood clot dislodged from its site of origin (Thromboembolic)
  • Headaches with symptoms (Migraine)
  • Vascular complications in diabetes mellitus
  • High risk elements of thrombosis (arterial and venous) such as arrhythmia, arterial, Hypertension, etc
  • Pancreatic disease
  • Renal diseases and liver disorders
  • Benign or malignant tumors
  • Hormone dependent disorders
  • Bleeding of the vagina
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Increased sensitivity or allergy to the ingredients of this medicine
  • Long term immobilization
  • Abnormal crescent shaped red blood cells (Sickle cell anemia)
  • Surgery
  • Major trauma
  • Chain smokers especially who smoke 40 cigarettes a day
  • Women who are older than 50 years

You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Microgynon if you experience the following conditions:

  • High blood cholesterol levels and obesity
  • Migraine
  • Abnormal growth of bone near the middle ear, leading to impairment of hearing (Otosclerosis)
  • Haemolytic-uraemic syndrome
  • Dubin-Johnson's syndrome
  • Itching during previous pregnancy
  • Gilbert-Meulengracht syndrome
  • Type I and Type II diabetes
  • Superficial Thrombophlebitis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Regional enteritis (Grohn's disease)
  • Hypertension

Side effects of Microgynon: Use of Microgynon tablets can cause some side effects that are wholly or partly unintended. The side effects stated below are only a distant possibility and there are no prior proven records of such effects due to Microgynon.

On rare occasions the users of this drug may experience depression, breast pain, urge to vomit, pain in the stomach, and headache. If this medicine is used for a long time then some women may have pigment spots on the face. Other side effects which users may face are rashes, convulsions, tiredness, mood swings, decreased sex drive, vaginal spotting, weight change, breast pain, upset stomach.

Users, that combin the drug with birth control pills can experience irregular bleeding during initial stages of use and if this continues on regular bases then a simple test for pregnancy or malignant growth should be done. Even before starting with microgynon it is best to have a general and gynecological examination.

  • Microgynon may react with drugs used to treat diabetes, so talk to your doctor about dosage change.
  • Antibiotics like rifampicin and ampicillin may lower the amount of Microgynon in the blood.
  • Medicines used to treat epilepsy and barbiturates may increase the metabolism of Microgynon.
