Therapeutic effects of Nystatin: Nystatin is grouped into polyolefinicantimycotic antibiotics and acts against yeast like Candida fungi. The fungal cell membrane contains a number of phytosterole structures. This drug contains a double bond which attributes a high affinity between the drug and the fungi. This attachment of drug-yeast complex increases the formation of channels and leads to uncontrolled electrolyte transfer thereby increases the cell osmolarity. This eventually leads to cell death. It must be noted that the fungi slowly develops resistance to the drug.
Indications:
- Nystatin is used for preventing and treating infections of the gastrointestinal tract caused by fungus called Candidiasis.
- Nystatin is used to prevent and treat fungal infections that occur prior to and after a gastrointestinal surgery.
Precautions and Restrictions: Do not use Nystatin if the following conditions apply to you:
- If you are highly sensitive to the ingredients of this preparation
- If you have infections caused by bacteria and virus which are taken care of without subsidiary treatment
Side effects of Nystatin: Below mentioned are some of the adverse reactions that users of Nystatin may experience:
- Cold and chills
- Various kinds of allergic reactions
- Elevated body temperature due to failed thermoregulation (Hyperthermia)
- Stomach ache
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Urge to vomit

Interactions: Nystatin may react with certain medicinal substances and increase or decrease or cause a totally unintended effect.
