Therapeutic effect of Amoxicillin: Amoxicillin, or Amox as it's also known, is an antibiotic which inhibits the growth of bacteria. This drug acts similar to other antibiotic medicines which fall under the category of Penicillin. Amoxicillin does not directly kill bacteria but it prevents the organism from producing its cell wall thereby making it incapable of defending itself from outer threats. The cell wall is an essential element for the survival of the bacteria and without it the bacterial cannot keep its contents intact.

Amoxicillin is very effective against many types of bacteria including Streptococci, Helicobacter pylori, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus anthracis, Neisseria meningitides, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Clostridium welchii, Clostridium tetani. It is also effective to a certain degree against Vibrio cholera, Shigella sonnei, Salmonella typhi, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus faecalis.

Indications: Amoxicillin is used to cure the following disorders:

  • Respiratory tract infections like Tonsillitis, Laryngitis, Pharyngitis, Sinusitis
  • Bacterial respiratory infections like pneumonia, acute or chronic bronchitis
  • Abdominal infection caused by bacteria like Peritnitis

  • STDs like Gonorrhea
  • Presence of large amount of bacteria in the blood stream

  • Infective endocarditis
  • Listeriosis caused by eating bacteria contaminated food
  • Blood poisoning
  • Tooth abscess
  • Typhoid and paratyphoid fever
  • Ulcer caused in the stomach

Precautions and Restrictions: Avoid using Amoxicillin if you have the following symptoms or conditions:

  • Liver diseases
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Mono or Infections mononucleosis
  • Lymphocytic leukemia
  • CMV or Cytomegalovirus
  • If you are a breast feeding mother
  • Pregnant
  • Undesirable reactions to Amoxicillin
  • Bleeding at different places

Side effects of Amoxicillin:: There is always a distant possibility of some kind of adverse effect that is wholly unintended. These side effects are only a distant possibility and there are no prior proven records of such effects due to Amoxicillin. Some of the adverse effects that may occur are:

  • The user's immune system may react abnormally to Amoxicillin and show allergic reactions like Angioedema, skin infection, hives, and allergic inflammation of the nasal airways, pink eye, and joint pain
  • The user may experience depression, sleeplessness, Cephalalgia, damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, Lightheadedness, seizures or fits
  • The user may experience Dysbacteriosis, Coloenteritis (Inflammation of the colon), Liver diseases, diarrhea, feel of unease, vomiting, and taste changes
  • Urinary tract abnormalities
  • Trompocytopenia, Leukopenia, Hypogranulocytosis, and Anemia
  • Breathlessness, inflammation in the mouth, swollen tongue, and Vaginal Candidiasis
